Lilliput Velasquez 1991

"I did a series of small paintings based on several different older paintings including a couple from the Walker Art gallery in Liverpool after I had seen them - Ships on the Mersey and "Molly Long Legs" by Stubbs . I call them Lilliput paintings because I distorted everything to fit into a small space. Here I made the legs even a bit longer for comic effect. With the portraits by Velazquez and Gainsborough I took these large grand scale kind of propaganda portraits and squish them into a small space. I wanted them to look as if viewing the world through a souvenir snow globe with my own take on it. It was my first pass at appropriating the past for my own purposes."

This work is based on Equestrian portrait of Philip IV by Velazquez (1635-1636) - Museo del Prado
