“In the same way that I appropriated older paintings for the Lilliput series by exaggerating physical proportions etc I did the same with this work although this painting is actually a fusion of two separate works by two different artists.

I took the figure of the girl in ‘Lady Caroline Howard 1778’ by Reynolds and made her head bigger so she looked a bit doll like, then I fused this with the horse (on the left) from Gainsboroughs “Portrait of a Nobleman with a horse 1771”

I was reading 'Villette' by Charlotte Bronte at the time so I wanted Bronte vibes and called it Paulina after the character in the novel.” – Christian Furr
