"This painting is not immediately identifiable as my style but it was because I wanted to try out something new to deal with something I was going though at the time. There was a lot of chaos in my life at the time and events beyond my control that I perceived as life being unfair. I wanted to try and capture that in a friendly understandable and appealing image. So I chose to paint something you might find in a fairground. It felt like there was no reason or balance in my life so I called it The Balance of Nature as a joke. .

This painting could also be about birth and certainly has a feel of the pop art of the sixties about it.

I wanted it to slowly rotate infinitely on a motor but I never got round to it.
I wanted to meld the dynamism of abstract expressionism action painting with the graphic pop art style. Energy and disorganisation in a, vibrant easy, colourful clean capsule. I was thinking about what the birth of something – a life or the inception of an idea - might look like visually. The moment of inception.
When I woke up from a bad dream as a kid I would read the Beano or the Dandy and they would instantly make me feel better. I loved the simplicity of the comic book. The immediate expression of often humorous ideas in a simple and direct way. I also like the pioneering animators – Tex Avery who visualized abstract ideas in humorous/inventive understandable ways. I always like the swirling hypnotising eyes in those cartoons. They are reassuring and discombobulating at the same time.

Because one of the ideas of the painting is about the birth of ideas, I wrote a poem at the same time.

Creators Prayer

Acknowledge the ideas makers
For without them nothing would happen
They are the seed breathers
The eternal sprouters
The tinder gardeners
They are the inception trustees
The imagination interns
The polite persuaders
They are the birth givers
The hypnotisers, the blue sky fliers
The wonder wizards
The furnace containers
Recognise the ideas makers!’"
