"I did a series of small paintings based on several different older paintings including a couple from the Walker gallery - Ships on the Mersey and Molly Long Legs. I call them Lilliput paintings because I distorted everything to fit into a small space. With the portraits by Velazquez and Gainsborough I took these large grand scale kind of propaganda portraits and squish them into a small space. I wanted them to look as if viewing the world through a souvenir snow globe with my own take on it. It was my first pass at appropriating the past for my own purposes."
