One of the three joke paintings created in 2006 that deal with the serious themes of existence, death and the passing/ freezing of time in visually comic way

Here the idea of time and the passing of time is crystallised in a comic book style depiction of a radically simplified 2D face in a mirror. The frame of the mirror - a device which reminds us of our own existence- is rendered in gold spray paint which Furr was using to create Pop art paintings, at the time, under the pseudonym 'Dan Whoarly' (An anagram of Andy Warhol). The pop art paintings were executed quickly as these small paintings were.
The mirror as a motif is one that occurs throughout Furr's work.

"I thought again about these three 2006 paintings recently. I was 40 yrs old at the time and was probably having a kind of mid life crisis as they all deal with death and existence. They say the artist reveals themselves in their portraits and here it was a very simple cartoon that could easily be the viewer as well as me as its ambiguous. When I was a teenager I used to draw these kind of cartoons for fun with my friend Ged Adamson. These heads were deliberately basic for comic effect. I like the idea of a reflection of someone or a moment getting frozen and here it happens in a kind of comedic way. It's meant to be funny but maybe serious too." - Furr 2024
