When we lived in Ham, I would come into the kitchen in the winter mornings and our silver tabby cat, ‘Chunky’, would be waiting outside the glass door in the darkness looking in at me slightly malevolently, waiting to be let in and fed, as we didn't have a cat flap then.

I liked the idea as an image and a concept. He was on the barrier between two worlds and it was like a slightly mystical image to me.
I measured the window of the door and this became the exact dimensions of the canvas.

The unusual composition of this painting, with its obelisk-like format was part of a series called ‘Animals’. My painting of the owl is the same format.
The cat painting contains an element of surprise as the viewer may not notice the presence of the cat in the abstract blackness until it is revealed when the eye travels vertically down to the bottom of the canvas.

The title refers to the theosophical concept of the dweller on the threshold. The cat appears like Kathy at the window in 'Wuthering Heights'. Reassuring or unnerving however you want to read it.

One of the other inspirations was a drawing of Mog - the forgetful cat from the children's book of the same name by Judith Kerr. It's a drawing of Mog at a window and the cat's expression amused me.
