"I like the concept of 'rose tinted'. One of my favourite landscapes is Claude Lorrain's 'A view of Roman Campagna' 1645 in the Queens Gallery which has an amazing rosey glow when you look at it. It shows the town of Tivoli and the ruins of the Villa of Maecenas to the left with the dome of St Peter's in Rome just visible on the horizon. This is where English travellers on the Grand Tour picknicked, observing the scene through tinted spectacles (called 'Claude Glasses') in order that their view might look somehting like this painting and that they could see it through the eyes of the artist." - Christian Furr
